IEA Stresses Benefits of Improving Efficiency in the Russian Power Sector

Speaking at the Second International Scientific and Practical Conference in Kemerovo, Russian Federation, Richard Jones, International Energy Agency's (IEA) Deputy Executive Director, said that by making coal-fired power plants more efficient and taking pressure off of valuable natural gas as a domestic energy provider, more of the latter could be exported, creating a win-win situation both domestically and internationally.

9 May 2011: Addressing the Second International Scientific and Practical Conference in Kemerovo, Russian Federation, which took place from 4-6 May 2011, Richard Jones, International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Deputy Executive Director, highlighted the potential for improving efficiency in the Russian Federation’s coal-fired power plants.

Jones stated that, by making coal-fired power plants more efficient and taking pressure off of valuable natural gas as a domestic energy provider, more of the latter could be exported, creating a win-win situation both domestically and internationally. He added that increasing efficiency is the fastest, most cost-effective method to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve energy security. [IEA Press Release]
