8 May 2012: The International Energy Agency (IEA) Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (SHC), in partnership with the AEE–Institute for Sustainable Technologies, has published “Solar Heat Worldwide: Markets and Contribution to the Energy Supply 2010.”

The publication documents the solar thermal capacity in worldwide markets, assesses the contribution of these systems to energy supplies and evaluates the CO2 emissions avoided by the use of solar energy systems. It notes that 78.5% of the total solar energy capacity for 2010 was installed in China and Europe, and that the yield of all water-based solar thermal systems operating in 2010 contributed to energy savings equivalent to 17.3 million tons of oil and 53.1 million tons of CO2. The report also describes the types of systems and their applications according to their distributions in certain economic regions, and provides an overview on large scale solar heating and cooling applications in Europe and worldwide.
