IEA Journal Addresses Best Practices, Denmark’s Path to Fossil Fuel Independence

The second issue of "IEAenergy: The Journal of the International Energy Agency” features articles on IEA's partnership with IRENA, an outlook for Africa, IEA's role in fostering low-carbon alternatives to energy technologies, the need for the IEA to share its best practices with the climate change community, and Denmark's green promises for the EU Presidency.

IEAApril 2012: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published the second issue of “IEAenergy: The Journal of the International Energy Agency.” Sub-titled “Renewable Energy: Coming of Age,” this issue features articles on. inter alia, the need for the IEA to share its best practices with the climate change community and Denmark’s perspective on energy and climate policy.
In an article titled “Fulfill the COP Accords, Turn to the Experts,” Richard Baron, Head of International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Climate Change Unit, calls on the IEA to share the Agency’s experiences, successes and failures in the transformation to low-carbon energy systems. He notes the IEA’s role in energy data collection and scenario development to assess the implications of achieving some of the goals set out by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In an article titled “Fossil Fuel Independence: Denmark’s Path,” Tom Baird, IEA Communications Advisor, highlights Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt’s reaffirmation of her country’s commitment to “ensure that the center of green research and green jobs stays in Europe in the future.” Taking over the EU Presidency in January 2012, the Prime Minister noted that, in order for the EU to maintain the lead position on energy and climate issues, there is a need for new initiatives in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

The journal also contains articles on IEA’s new partnership with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), an outlook for Africa, the IEA’s role in fostering low-carbon alternatives to energy technologies, a renewables market report, the role of renewables in electricity security, the growing share of renewables in the energy mix, and oil and gas consumption.
