3 February 2009: The International Energy Agency (IEA) hosted an experts meeting on carbon capture and storage (CCS) from 2-3 February 2009, in Paris, France. The event brought together over 50 CCS regulatory, finance, insurance and public awareness experts to develop an international CCS Roadmap that describes targets and timetables for rapid CCS demonstration and deployment.

Participants identified those issues that must be addressed for CCS to deliver the necessary greenhouse gas emissions reductions in time for global climate stabilization by 2050, including: appropriate financing mechanisms for CCS; adequate legal and regulatory frameworks that protect the public health and safety and rapid CCS demonstration; full engagement of the public to understand their questions and design projects to meet their informational and risk mitigation needs; and active involvement of emerging economies that rely heavily on fossil fuels.
In the coming months, the IEA will work with partners to develop technology and policy milestones and metrics that will guide international CCS efforts.
