IEA Highlights Importance of Energy Security for Climate Change Mitigation
story highlights

Speaking at the Windsor Energy Group (WEG) annual consultation to UK policy-makers, IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard Jones discussed the changes needed in power sector, and called energy efficiency the "quiet giant" that is key to radically reducing carbon emissions.

8 March 2011: Addressing the Windsor Energy Group (WEG) annual consultation to UK policy-makers, Richard Jones, International Energy Agency (IEA) Deputy Executive Director, underscored the role of energy efficiency in addressing climate change.

While discussing the required changes in power sector, such as “aggressive investments” in nuclear, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and renewables, Jones underlined that energy efficiency is the key to radically reducing emissions. He highlighted the multiple political goals improving efficiency would achieve, focusing on climate change and energy security. Jones also pointed to the findings of IEA’s publication “Energy Technology Perspectives 2010,” which examines the least expensive method of halving energy-related carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.
