IEA13 April 2015: The World Energy Outlook (WEO) 2015 will include a special report on India, where changes in the energy sector will have far-reaching consequences for regional and global markets, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The IEA and National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), supported by The Energy Resource Institute (TERI), recently held an ‘India Energy Outlook’ workshop to gather input for the report, which will include prospects to 2040 for India’s energy sector.

The event, held 13 April 2015 in New Delhi, India, attracted 140 experts from governments, international agencies and organizations, academia, energy companies, the financial community and civil society. IEA Chief Economist Fatih Birol gave remarks, commenting that “India is in the middle of a profound transformation, which is driven by the energy transformation.” He explained that WEO 2015 is taking an in-depth look at the country’s energy challenges because “what matters to India, will matter to the world.”

According to TERI, India will become the main driver of global energy demand from the mid-2020s, surpassing China. Birol suggested that nuclear will have a critical role in meeting this demand, and that, while the country’s solar targets are ambitious they can be achieved. The special report, with its in-depth assessment of the energy sector, will be published in November 2015. [TERI Press Release] [IEA Press Release]
