IEA Executive Director Highlights Progress on Energy Efficiency

Speaking at the Global Energy Efficiency Forum in Brussels, Belgium, IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka highlighted results from IEA's recently published “Clean Energy Progress Report,” citing improvements noted since the last review in 2009.

13 April 2011: In a speech delivered at the Global Energy Efficiency Forum in Brussels, Belgium, Nobuo Tanaka, Executive Director, International Energy Agency (IEA), outlined progress made thus far and the importance of continuing to improve energy efficiency.

Tanaka highlighted results from IEA’s recently published “Clean Energy Progress Report,” citing improvements noted since the last review in 2009, and said that if currently proposed actions are carried out in full, 7.6 gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions could be saved annually by 2030. He called energy efficiency the single more important component in the fight to keep the global temperature increase below 2 degrees Celsius, and highlighted energy efficiency’s role in improving energy security.

Christiana Figueres, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, also made a statement on the importance of, and barriers to energy efficiency, and accepted an award on behalf of the UNFCCC at the Forum.
