30 May 2012: ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability has published the results of its Local Sustainability 2012 study, which outlines various local sustainability initiatives in order to identify opportunities and barriers to scaling up local action.

The study, which was conducted in partnership with the Charles Leopold Mayer Foundation and UN Agency For Human Settlements (UN-HABITAT), addresses three main issues: the main driving forces behind local sustainability processes; key reference frameworks that influence the scope and ambition of local action, how these are developed and their impact at the local level; and the changes, including in the role of local governments, that have happened over the last two decades of local sustainability processes.

The results of the study are contained in two reports: “Taking Stock and Moving Forward – Global Review;” and “Showcasing Progress – Case Studies.” ICLEI also offers a list of recommendations, including on the role of a green economy and the need for a new definition of growth.
