18 June 2012: The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) launched “Flightpath to a Sustainable Future,” an initiative for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) consisting of the first-ever series of connecting flights powered by sustainable alternative fuels.

Raymond Benjamin, ICAO Secretary General, will travel from Montreal, Canada, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the connecting flights to attend the UNCSD. Benjamin stated that the initiative demonstrates “that sustainable biofuels are now a reality,” adding that advanced alternative fuels help reduce carbon dioxide emissions without competing for land or water with food crops.

In addition, the Air Transport Action Group’s (ATAG) Aviation and Environment Summit’s Declaration will be presented at the UNCSD. The Declaration addresses the role of the aviation sector in economic growth, providing jobs, and environmental responsibility.

The “Flightpath to a Sustainable Future” initiative was launched with support from the Air Transport Group and in cooperation with industry stakeholders. [ICAO Press Release] [ATAG Press Release]
