IAEA’s Scientific Forum Considers Climate Change, Ocean Acidification

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) concluded its 57th annual session of the General Conference, adopting resolutions related to nuclear science and technology, safety, security, safeguards and technical cooperation.

IAEA20 September 2013: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) concluded its 57th annual session of the General Conference, adopting resolutions related to nuclear science and technology, safety, security, safeguards and technical cooperation.

A Scientific Forum on The Blue Planet was held in conjunction with the General Conference to consider challenges related to climate change and ocean acidification, as well as nuclear applications for a sustainable marine environment. The Forum stressed the importance of coastal and marine systems, the cumulative pressures facing those systems, and the need for collaborative partnerships for a targeted response to climate change and ocean acidification.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano addressed the Conference and considered the Agency’s contribution to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). He stated that through the IEAE technical cooperation programme, “the Agency is helping developing countries gain access to the great benefits of nuclear technology.”

In addition, the General Conference approved the membership of Brunei Darussalam and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Delegates also approved the reappointment of Director General Yukiya Amano for an additional term of four years.
