Deputy Director General, noted that in 2008, the international community became conscience of the links between climate change, the food and energy crises and hunger.

He stressed the link between these challenges and the role mutation
induction can play by increasing production yields, biomass, nutrient
composition, or the carbon sequestration potential of crops. Burkart stated
that combined technology packages based on mutation induction applied to sound
agriculture will foster new tools to improve plant breeding. [The statement]
