Global Water ForumMarch 2015: Implementing smart policies related to land and water resources can help to achieve water and food security objectives within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to a paper published by the Global Water Forum (GWF). The article stresses that, as long as resources are wisely allocated and managed, sufficient water will exist to achieve food production goals and sustain livelihoods.

The paper focuses on SDG 2, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, and SDG 6, which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

The article outlines water demands in 2050, and states that: urban water demands will increase; agriculture will remain important and complementary policies and investments are required. It recommends, inter alia: investments to increase the incomes of the poor; and wise allocation and management of water resources to minimize water shortages and promote agricultural production and livelihood opportunities.

The article describes the importance of policies and investments to: enable access to water for household use and agricultural production; ensure that farmers retain access to water for producing food and sustaining livelihoods; and create greater opportunities for women in agriculture. It also recommends that policymakers undertake efforts to: ensure investments are made in new technologies, which enhance crop and livestock production; and encourage private sector investment in activities that enhance wastewater capture and reuse and create employment opportunities in rural areas.
