The February 2014 edition of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) Newsletter focuses on the UN General Assembly designation of 5 December as World Soil Day, as well as plans for the International Year of Soils in 2015.

Global Soil Partnership (GSP)February 2014: The February 2014 edition of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) Newsletter focuses on the UN General Assembly’s designation of 5 December as World Soil Day, as well as plans for the International Year of Soils in 2015.

The newsletter describes the events of World Soil Day 2013, and outlines upcoming events for the second working session of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) and the Second Plenary Assembly in 2014. The bulletin also welcomes the Pacific Regional Soil Partnership, to be established in May/June 2014, and describes the planned process for the development of Regional Soil Partnerships.

The GSP also announced the launch of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Soils Portal. FAO will facilitate the implementation of the World Soil Day and the International Year of Soils. Decisions on the Steering Committee and directions for the International Year of Soils will be addressed at the upcoming GSP Plenary Assembly from 22-24 July 2014.
