Global Soil Partnership (GSP)21 April 2014: The Global Soil Partnership (GSP) Secretariat, in furthering its preparations for the International Year of Soils (IYS), has put out a call to partners and soil stakeholders to suggest activities for inclusion in programming for the Year. The Secretariat is currently developing an IYS Plan of Action, which will address the implementation of the IYS. The GSP Plenary Assembly, set to take place in July 2014, is expected to discuss and endorse the Plan.

The UN General Assembly declared 2015 as the IYS, with the aim of raising awareness on the contribution of soils to climate change adaptation and mitigation, ecosystem functions and services, food security, poverty alleviation and sustainable development. The IYS further aims to, inter alia: raise awareness on desertification, land degradation and drought; promote policies and actions for the sustainable management and protection of soil resources; catalyze initiatives in connection with the post-2015 development agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) process; and advocate for enhancing capacities and systems to collect and monitor information on soil at global, regional and national levels.
