GRI Opens Public Opportunity to Shape Sustainability Reporting Guidelines
story highlights

The "exposure draft" of the Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) fourth generation of guidelines on sustainability reporting are open for public comment.

Proposed changes to the current guidelines relate to, inter alia: strengthening the link between corporate governance and sustainability performance; and new definitions of supply chains and suppliers, including procurement practice, screening and assessment.

1 August 2012: The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has opened a public comment period to contribute to its fourth-generation (G4) sustainability reporting guidelines. G4 aims to improve the technical quality of the guidelines, their user-friendliness, and harmonization with other internationally accepted standards and processes, including those of the International Integrated Reporting Council.

GRI notes that changes to the current guidelines on sustainability reporting relate to defining the content, transparency and boundaries of such reports; explaining how economic, environment and social impacts are being managed; strengthening the link between corporate governance and sustainability performance; and new definitions of supply chains and suppliers, including procurement practice, screening and assessment. GRI has established working groups to develop the guidelines’ content, focusing on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, anti-corruption, and other topics.

The proposed draft changes are open for feedback from individuals and organizations until 25 September 2012, via a secure web platform, email and written submissions.

GRI is a multi-stakeholder, network-based organization in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, that promotes transparent corporate sustainability reporting worldwide, working in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Global Compact, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and other organizations.
