11 August 2010: In its latest press release, Greening the Blue recounts sustainability reporting by various UN organizations, highlighting the efforts of UN agencies to communicate how they incorporate climate change into their core work.

In particular, Greening the Blue lists the efforts of: the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in spelling out the link between climate change, poverty reduction and development in their websites; and the World Bank and the UN University (UNU) in diversifying the content on their approach to sustainability, such as the World Bank’s Climate Change Portal, with emphasis on mitigation and adaptation programmes, the value of indigenous knowledge and innovative financing projects.

However, Greening the Blue also notes that many UN agencies could improve communication on their internal efforts to measure and reduce their environmental impacts, including details of goals, strategies and successes. It further underlines that the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has made a start in this direction, as its website provides an overview of its internal sustainability goals and performance, with concrete examples. Greening the Blue encourages other UN to follow this example and welcomes the UN Communications Group’s agreement at a meeting held in Shanghai, China, on 17-18 June 2010, that all UN organizations will include a page on their sustainability performance on their websites.
