2 October 2009: The Governors’ Global Climate Summit 2, held from 30 September-2 October 2009, in Los Angeles, US, produced a declaration in which leaders present at the meeting committed to work together to pursue clean transportation and mobility, support national climate change legislation, and include forests in climate policy development.

Participants further acknowledged the need for adaptation efforts and recognized the role of subnational governments in the discussions on the next global climate agreement being negotiated in Copenhagen. The Summit was held from 30 September-2 October 2009, in Los Angeles, US, co-hosted by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and California’s Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. UNDP Director of Policy and Assistant Secretary-General Olav Kjorven stressed that UNDP will continue to support national governments on planning, financing and implementing the foundations of a low carbon economy, coupled with poverty reduction measures. UNEP Regional Office for North America Director Amy Fraenkel noted that the Summit has clearly demonstrated that local and state governments have a key role to play in addressing climate change.
