January 2013: The Global Mechanism (GM) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) provided a chapter for discussion at the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) second meeting of the Ad Hoc Expert Group on Forest Financing (AHEG 2). The chapter contributed to the work of AHEG 2 to prepare options on recommendations of forest finance for consideration by the tenth meeting of UNFF (UNFF 10).

The chapter was published as part of the “2012 Study on Forest Financing” prepared by the Advisory Group on Finance (AGF) of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF). The chapter draws on the experience of the GM with regard to integrated financing strategies and identifies a weak enabling environment as one of the principle obstacles to forest finance.

To overcome barriers to forest finance, the GM chapter recommends enhanced cross-sectoral collaboration (including with sectors such as agriculture, energy, water and finance), improved clarity on land tenure and resource use rights, better data collection and knowledge management and enhanced awareness raising.

The AHEG 2 meeting took place from 14-18 January 2013, in Vienna, Austria, and was attended by GM experts from West and Central Africa and Asia and the Pacific. [GM Press Release] [Publication: 2012 Study on Forest Financing][Forests Policy & Practice post about AHEG 2]
