story highlights

The annual report, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Partnership, highlights several collaborative projects with UN and regional bodies, including with UN-Energy on public-private partnerships on sustainable energy development, as well as regional projects, workshops, the Partnership's educational programme, and highlights of 20 years of worldwide activities.

31 May 2012: The Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership has released its annual activity report, which celebrates the Partnership’s 20th anniversary, and covers its partnership with UN-Energy, its annual summit, international collaboration activities, workshops and projects.

The report highlights the Partnership’s cooperation with UN-Energy on public-private partnerships on sustainable energy development. The culmination of this initiative was the Partnership’s annual summit in New York, US, on 2 June 2011, which discussed: the role of public-private partnerships’ best practices for energy policies; long-term stable policy frameworks; and the integration of partnerships into electricity and energy services development plans.

The report further covers the Partnership’s international collaboration activities, including presentation of work to create stronger public-private partnerships on climate change mitigation and energy access at the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the Partnership’s participation in the Steering Committee of the Energy for All Partnership of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The report also provides an overview of two projects: the Argentina-Patagonia Chorriaca Wind-Diesel Hybrid and Cochico Micro-hydro Project; and the Dhiffushi (Maldives) Solar Ice Project, which serves as a pilot project for the ADB’s Asia Solar Energy Initiative (ASEI).

On human capacity building initiatives, the report mentions several seminars and workshops, including: a series of “Financing Sustainable Electrification Dialogues,” organized in collaboration with the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA); a seminar on “Electricity Interconnection,” organized together with UNDESA; and a workshop on best practices for large hydropower development, organized with the Regional Energy Integration Commission of Latin America (CIER).

The report also covers several other topics, such as the Partnership’s Education for Sustainable Energy Development Programme, and highlights of 20 years of worldwide activities, organized per region. Finally, the report also looks forward and reaffirms its commitment to its core mission of promoting sustainable energy development and playing an active role in global electricity issues.
