Global Green Growth Forum (3GF)7 June 2016: The 2016 Global Green Growth Forum (3GF) showcased a range of “solutions” for promoting sustainability and encouraging private sector investments in sustainable development, highlighting initiatives related to sustainable energy, water management, climate-smart cities and others aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 3GF took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 6-7 June 2016. The event comprised panels on sustainable energy, water resource management, food systems, the role of cities as drivers of the green economy, building efficiency, resilient infrastructure and related topics.

In a panel discussion on sustainable energy, African Development Bank (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina called for accelerating financial investments in projects such as the AfDB-funded Lake Turkana wind power project in Kenya, which had attracted private-sector investment to provide clean and affordable energy. Adesina noted that the Bank will triple its level of financing for climate-related projects to US$5 billion annually, and aims to leverage around US$20 billion in public-private partnerships for climate mitigation and adaptation by 2020.

According to the AfDB, Africa is the second fastest growing region in the world after Asia, with a predicted regional growth rate of 3.6% in 2016, above the global growth rate of 3.2%.

The 3GF drew attention to examples of innovative systems thinking, aiming to accelerate delivery of the SDGs related to green growth, including those on cities, energy, forests, water, land, sustainable consumption and production (SCP), food and hunger, and finance. The event brought together approximately 300 representatives from business, government and civil society from around the world, in particular, from 3GF partner countries, namely: China, Ethiopia, Kenya, Korea, Mexico, Qatar and Viet Nam.

The Government of Denmark began organizing the 3GF in collaboration with the Governments of the Republic of Korea and Mexico. In 2012, China, Kenya and Qatar joined the partnership, and in 2014 Ethiopia become the 7th partner. Other 3GF partners include: ABB, Alstom, Bidco Group & Kenya Private Sector Alliance and East African Business Council, Danfoss, Hyundai Motors, McKinsey & Company, Novozymes, Samsung, Siemens, Vestas, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Energy Agency (IEA), UN Global Compact, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Climate Policy Initiative, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Resources Institute (WRI).
