Global Good Practice Publication Analyzes INDCs, LEDS, NAMAs and MRV Systems
story highlights

The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Low Emission Capacity Building Programme have released a second edition of the Global Good Practice Analysis (GPA 2.0), which discusses 19 case studies demonstrating how intended nationally-determined contributions (INDCs), low-emission development strategies (LEDS), nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs), and measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) systems are being effectively designed and implemented across a range of national contexts in developed and developing countries.

mrv_unepDecember 2015: The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Low Emission Capacity Building Programme have released a second edition of the Global Good Practice Analysis (GPA 2.0), which discusses 19 case studies demonstrating how intended nationally-determined contributions (INDCs), low-emission development strategies (LEDS), nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs), and measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) systems are being effectively designed and implemented across a range of national contexts in developed and developing countries.

Titled ‘Good Practice Analysis 2.0 on INDCs, LEDS, NAMAs and MRV,’ the publication documents examples of mitigation-related good practices worldwide and provides insights on successes and lessons learned that can be disseminated internationally to support increased mitigation ambition.

The publication consists of five chapters describing the approach used, key elements of good practice, and success factors and lessons learned, with good practice criteria outlined in an annex. The cases studies include: Burkina Faso biomass energy NAMA; inclusive and technically sound INDC development process in Chile; limiting coal consumption in China; stakeholder involvement and the consideration of co-benefits in the preparation of the Dominican Republic’s INDC; promoting induction cooking in Ecuador; the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS); Ghana’s ambitious climate reporting programme; an inter-sectoral approach to Jordan’s INDC process; an integrated national climate policy in Mexico; initiative and innovation in the Norwegian INDC preparation; 100% renewable energy targets in the Pacific Islands; and making progress on President Obama’s Climate Action Plan in the US.

The cases were examined by a NewClimate Institute-led consortium, which includes the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN), The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Libélula. [Publication: Good Practice Analysis 2.0 on INDCs, LEDS, NAMAs and MRV] [GPA 2.0 Summary Report Webpage]
