Global Compact Reports on Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum, GRI Collaboration
story highlights

The July issue of the Global Compact Bulletin focuses on the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum and reports on the launch by the Global Compact and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) of new collaborations: the adoption of a joint declaration making the case for greater scale and collaboration; and a new programme to boost sustainable business and reporting in developing countries.

July 2012: The July 2012 issue of the UN Global Compact Bulletin features the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum, which took place during the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). It also highlights new collaborations with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), including a joint statement on the need to take corporate sustainability implementation and reporting practices to greater scale, and calling on governments to work more fully with the international business community.

The Corporate Sustainability Forum took place from 15-18 June 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in cooperation with the Rio+20 Secretariat, the UN System and the Global Compact Local Network Brazil. The resulting text was presented to the UN Secretary-General at Rio+20. Forum participants also: committed to engage in the sustainable development goals (SDGs) process; adopted action pledges to kick off the Rio+20 drive for sustainability solutions; and launched the Framework for Action on Social Enterprise and Impact Investing, as well as the New Alliance to Promote Supplier Diversity and Inclusion. The event also saw the commitment of CEOs to water sustainability.

As part of the collaboration between Global Compact and GRI, they launched a €3.2 million programme, along with the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, to build the capacity of businesses in developing countries to manage and report on key economic, environmental and social issues, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy efficiency, human rights, women’s empowerment and anti-corruption.
