cleancookstoves1 October 2013: Reports released by the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves focus on progress in addressing the health, economic and environmental consequences of using traditional, dirty cooking fuels and technologies, and the socioeconomic and environmental value of focusing on women’s empowerment as a driver of the transition to clean cookstove use.

The ‘2012 Results Report: Sharing Progress on the Path to Adoption of Clean Cooking Solutions’ tracks Alliance partners’ progress towards reaching their shared goal of seeing the adoption of clean cookstoves and fuels in 100 million households by 2020. The 246 respondents manufactured 9.6 million stoves and distributed 8.2 million in 59 countries, which is more than twice the number reported in 2011. Further breakdowns indicating urban/rural, direct sales vs. sales to intermediaries, portable vs. fixed stove sales, as well as financing and quality testing of stoves are also discussed. This is first data-rich report on cookstove production and sales, and is expected to serve as the baseline for future reports.

The report ‘Scaling Adoption of Clean Cooking Solutions through Women’s Empowerment: A Resource Guide’ explains that, because women are the primary consumers and users of cooking products in the Alliance’s target countries, women must be fully integrated in every aspect of the clean cookstove value chain to ensure that products meet the demands of users and they are fully adopted.

The report bridges gaps in and compiles existing literature into a practical “how to” guide aimed at women’s integration throughout the clean cooking sector. It contains sections on each facet of the cookstove value chain, including product design, production, consumer finance, supplier finance, distribution and after-sales service. Each section includes: an overview of the segment and role women can play; best practices for that segment; case studies demonstrating best practices; stories of individual women who have made impacts; showcases of innovative best practices; and a chart of best practices and tools and resources.

The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is a public-private partnership initiated by the UN Foundation.
