GLIPSA26 February 2013: The Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) has released an update on recent progress toward the Western Indian Ocean Coastal Challenge (WIO-CC), and on plans for 2013. Plans include formalizing WIO-CC support mechanisms and communications modalities.

According to the update, which covers the period since the WIO-CC’s Second Regional Technical Meeting in October 2012, progress has been made on formalizing the role of the Consortium for the Conservation of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO-C) to provide the WIO-CC with: human and financial resource mobilization assistance; technical and informational support; and communication and advocacy. A Memorandum of Understanding MOU) defining support is being finalized.

GLISPA notes that progress also has been made on engaging the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) to support the WIO-CC in establishing a regional network/resource center for climate change. In addition, a Third Regional Technical Meeting is being planned, likely to be held back-to-back with the first preparatory meeting for the 2014 UN conference on small island developing States (SIDS) for the Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and South China Sea (AIMS) region.

The update also reports that WIO-CC has formed a Communications Working Group to facilitate the use of media and communication tools to support its objectives and the flow of information between countries and supporters. The GLISPA Coordination Team are designing the Communications Strategy.

WIO-CC’s goal is to mobilize commitments to fulfill existing conventions and strategies, by inspiring leadership, catalyzing resources and facilitating collaboration toward a shared, long-term vision. [Publication: Progress Update 1] [WIO-CC Declaration]
