April 2013: The Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) has released a Scoping Paper proposing a framework to monitor progress on green growth and green economy. As outlined in “Moving towards a Common Approach on Green Growth Indicators,” the framework seeks to provide a common basis for further developing green growth/green economy indicators that focus on the economy-environment nexus.

The paper: offers a conceptual framework to help select and organize indicators; presents key principles for achieving high-quality indicators; proposes a list of indicators selected from those that are currently used; explores a proposed “dashboard” of headline indicators; looks at measuring wealth beyond Gross Domestic Product (GDP); discusses the limitations of these approaches (such as the assumption the different types of assets can be substituted for one another) and the challenges ahead (particularly regarding data quality and availability); and sets out an agenda for further progress.

GGKP is a global network of researchers and development experts that identifies and addresses major knowledge gaps in green growth theory and practice. GGKP was launched in Mexico City, Mexico in January 2012 by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Bank. The Scoping Paper was produced under GGKP’s program on Green Growth Measurement and Indicators. [GGKP Website] [Publication: Moving towards a Common Approach on Green Growth Indicators]
