action_campaign_german24 May 2016: As part of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Action Campaign, an initiative of the UN Secretary-General, the Government of Germany is suppporting the establishment of a Global Campaign Centre in Bonn. The SDG Action Campaign replaces the UN Millennium Campaign, and is administered by the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

The Campaign is mandated to support the UN and its Member States on public engagement and advocacy on SDG implementation. It focuses on four key areas: accountability and monitoring; communications and storytelling; teamwork and innovation; and media.

Magdy Martínez-Solimán, UNDP, and Friedrich Kitschelt, German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, signed a statement of intent on 24 May 2016, outlining Germany’s support for the Centre, including €3.5 million to establish the Global Campaign Center and promote global activities.

The Global Campaign Center aims to inspire people’s actions on the SDGs and will provide advocacy support, big data expertise and analysis for partners around the world. The Global Campaign Center will be housed at ‘Haus Carstanjen,’ where the recently opened Knowledge Center for Sustainable Development of the UN System Staff College has its office. The location is anticipated to ensure synergies between the two UN entities on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Campaign also will maintain a presence in New York, US, to ensure a strong link with the UN Development Group (UNDG) and the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General.

Martínez-Solimán said the statement of intent “sends a strong signal about Germany’s commitment to the SDGs.” Kitschelt described the step as another milestone in Bonn’s role as a UN city and “a global hub for sustainability.” [UNRIC Press Release] [UNDP Press Release] [SDG Action Campaign]
