July 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF), through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), is supporting a project in Brazil to establish and implement a National Forest Monitoring and Assessment System, a programme activity in the Brazilian Forest Service that will continue after the closure of the project.

Launched in 2011, the project will focus on improving information on the state and dynamics of Brazil’s forest resources and their management, to improve decision making by the Government of Brazil. It also will allow more targeted interventions to identify and confront specific threats. The GEF Grant assigns US$8,850,000 to this project, which will be implemented over a five-year period.
