SGP6 March 2013: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) has announced the launch of a new small island developing States community based adaption (SIDS-CBA) project in Seychelles. The project will work with coastal communities to address adaptation to coastal erosion and salinity from saltwater intrusion into agricultural lands.

The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) officially launched the project at an event held on 18 January 2013. AusAID is funding the project, which will be implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and delivered by the GEF SGP. According to the GEF, the work will focus on the island of Praslin, where the most severe effects from climate change in the country are being felt.

Begun in 2009, the SGP CBA is funded by a US$6 million grant from AusAID, with the goal of working with vulnerable communities to identify and implement community based adaptation measures through small grants up to US$50,000. The SGP also provides technical support and capacity building to affected communities. [SGP Press Release] [SGP CBA Website] [IISD RS Story on the SGP CBA]
