GEF Publishes Roadmap for Accessing LDC Climate Fund
story highlights

The LDC Fund (LDCF), managed by the GEF, supports the preparation and the implementation of the National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs), thus any LDC country having completed its NAPA is eligible for funding projects under the LDC Fund.

May 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has published a roadmap to clarify the steps necessary for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to access funds for climate change adaptation and mitigation through the LDC Fund (LDCF).

As noted in the publication, the Least Developed Countries Fund was established under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the seventh session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 7), in Marrakech, and is managed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The fund addresses the special needs of LDCs, which are especially vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. As a priority, the LDCF supports the preparation and the implementation of the National Adaptation Programs of Action (NAPAs), which are country driven strategies that identify urgent and immediate needs of LDCs to adapt to climate change. Any LDC who is party to the UNFCCC and has completed their NAPA is eligible for project funding under the LDCF.

The publication, titled “Accessing Resources Under the Least Developed Countries Fund,” reviews the steps necessary to present a project, and other relevant topics, including rules and policies, reporting requirements, criteria for approval, co-finance and direct access. The Annexes include templates for project presentations. [Publication: Accessing Resources Under the Least Developed Countries Fund]
