GEF Holds Workshop on Monitoring, Capacity Building in Western Sahel

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has completed a three-day Expanded Capacity Workshop (ECW) for the West African Sahel, bringing together focal points from the GEF, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

GEF14 March 2013: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has completed a three-day Expanded Capacity Workshop (ECW) for the West African Sahel, bringing together focal points from the GEF, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

Representatives from civil society, the GEF Secretariat, and the GEF Agencies, also participated in the event, which took place in Dakar, Senegal, from 12-14 March 2013.

ECW sessions covered: results based management (RBM) and tracking tools for progress in achieving the impacts and outcomes established at the portfolio level under each focal area; monitoring and evaluation for the promotion of accountability and learning among GEF activities and partners; and practical exercises for conducting National Capacity Self-Assessments (NCSA) for the UNCCD. NCSA reports for Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Chad and Gambia are available on the GEF ECW website.

The agenda also included presentations by Convention Secretariats on synergies in project design, discussions on the GEF 2020 Strategy, the new GEF Fee Policy, Project Cycle harmonization, and policies and procedures for civil society participation in GEF programmes and projects.
