GEF-Funded UNEP-WCMC Project Focuses on Conservation Impacts of Climate Change
story highlights

The Universities of Kent and Durham are conducting research as part of the Protected Areas Resilient to Climate Change (PARCC) project, which is financed by the GEF and led by UNEP-WCMC.

The project aims to measure how well different species within West Africa's national parks and wildlife reserves are currently protected, and how this will change when species alter their distribution in response to climate change.

20 March 2012: The University of Kent has announced that, together with the University of Durham, it is conducting research on mitigating the conservation impacts of climate change on protected areas in West Africa, as part of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) financed project, led by the UN Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC).

The Protected Areas Resilient to Climate Change (PARCC) project aims to measure how well different species within West Africa’s national parks and wildlife reserves are currently protected, and how this will change when species alter their distribution in response to climate change. The University of Kent will focus on identifying potential new protected areas and corridors to conserve the species in the wake of climate change. PARCC will focus on wildlife in Chad, Gambia, Mali, Sierra Leone and Togo. [University of Kent Press Release]
