18 October 2008: During a meeting on the sidelines of the
Francophonie Summit, which convened in Quebec City, Canada, from 17-19 October
2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and French President Nicolas Sarkozy
agreed on the need to hold an emergency G-8 summit to address the financial
crisis and ensure that its negative impact on the world’s economies does not
undermine the major UN efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, to
fight against the effects of climate change and to address the food crisis.
Ban
welcomed the French invitation to the UN Secretary-General and the heads of the
World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to participate in the meeting,
which would be convened early December 2008. He also offered the facilities of
the UN Secretariat in New York, US, for holding the Summit. [Statement of the
