G-77/China Ministers Call for Implementation of Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, Aichi Biodiversity Targets

29 September 2011: The Ministerial Declaration of the Group of 77 and China, adopted on 23 September 2011 in New York, recognizes the important outcomes of the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the fifth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and calls for implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.

The Declaration was adopted during the 35th annual meeting of the G-77/China Ministers for Foreign Affairs. It calls for the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 as the overarching biodiversity framework, and highlights the importance of ongoing efforts aimed at translating the Strategic Plan’s Aichi Targets into national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs). The Ministers also took note of the adoption of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits arising from their Utilization, and reaffirmed the importance of the draft multi-year plan of action on south-south cooperation on biodiversity for development, to be adopted at CBD COP-11 [CBD Communiqué]
