France, Peru Issue Call for Action on Climate Change and Decent Work

François Rebsamen, Minister of Labor, Employment, Vocational Training and Social Dialogue, France, and Luis Enrique Chávez Basagoitia, Permanent Representative of Peru to the UN in Geneva, signed a Joint Call on Climate Change and Decent Work.

The Joint Call encourages Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to better integrate decent work dimensions into the fight against climate change, both in negotiations towards a new climate agreement, and in formulating and implementing national policies.

france-peru26 June 2015: François Rebsamen, Minister of Labor, Employment, Vocational Training and Social Dialogue, France, and Luis Enrique Chávez Basagoitia, Permanent Representative of Peru to the UN in Geneva, signed a Joint Call on Climate Change and Decent Work. The Joint Call encourages Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to better integrate decent work dimensions into the fight against climate change, both in negotiations towards a new climate agreement, and in formulating and implementing national policies.

The Joint Call was signed as part of the 104th session of the International Labor Conference, which is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 1-13 June 2015

Among other things, the Call: urges all countries to pursue climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts that act as a strong driver of growth, job creation, social justice, gender equality and poverty eradication; encourages countries to adopt policies that orientate public and private investments, and provide incentives to enterprises and consumers towards labor-intensive sectors, in particular those vulnerable to climate change; and calls on UNFCCC Parties to promote social protection and other appropriate social policies among means of adaptation to climate change, to reduce vulnerability and exclusion, prevent the loss of jobs and income, and secure livelihoods.

Governments, employers and workers are also encouraged to pursue their action in favor of climate, on the basis of social dialogue, aiming at a strong social consensus to reach climate goals more quickly with the full support of all actors within society.

The broad policies of the International Labour Organization (ILO) are set by the the International Labour Conference, which meets once a year in June, in Geneva, Switzerland. This annual Conference brings together governments’, workers’ and employer’s delegates of the ILO member States.
