Former Kigali Mayor Appointed UN-Habitat Deputy Executive Director

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Aisa Kirabo Kacyira of Rwanda as UN-HABITAT Deputy Executive Director and Assistant Secretary-General.

She is currently the governor of the Rwanda's largest province and has served as Mayor of Kigali City and a member of Parliament.

11 October 2011: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Aisa Kirabo Kacyira (Rwanda) as Deputy Executive Director and Assistant Secretary-General for the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT). She succeeds Inga Björk-Klevby (Sweden).

Kirabo is currently the Governor of Eastern Province, the largest province in Rwanda. Previously, she was the Mayor of Kigali City (2006-2011), which under her leadership received the UN-HABITAT Scroll of Honour Award in 2008 for efforts to promote greenness, safety, sustainable and affordable housing. Before becoming the Mayor of Kigali, Kirabo was a member of Parliament and of the Parliamentary Standing Committee in charge of land use and management, settlement and environment.
