FOREST EUROPE Expert Meeting Adopts Work Programme

Held from 11-12 May 2016, in Bratislava, Slovakia, a FOREST EUROPE Expert Level Meeting discussed and adopted a new work programme for cooperation on forests and forestry in Europe for the time frame of 2016 to 2020.

Fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Legally-Binding Agreement on Forests in Europe (INC-Forests4)11 May 2016: Held from 11-12 May 2016, in Bratislava, Slovakia, a FOREST EUROPE Expert Level Meeting discussed and adopted a new work programme for cooperation on forests and forestry in Europe for the time frame of 2016 to 2020.

The work programme outlines key thematic areas including: further development of policies and tools for sustainable forest management; forest monitoring and reporting; enhancing the role of sustainable forest management in a green economy; incorporating the value of forest ecosystem services in a green economy; protection and adaptation of forests to a changing environment and climate; and enhancing the social dimension of sustainable forest management for human health and well-being.

The meeting gathered experts from 31 countries, the European Commission and 14 international observer organizations. This was the first expert level meeting organized by the Liaison Unit Bratislava, with Slovakia currently co-chairing the FOREST EUROPE process, together with Spain. It is recalled that the mandate of expert level meetings is to take decisions on implementation of the commitments made at ministerial conferences, and to prepare policy agendas for forthcoming ministerial conferences.
