FOREST EUROPE Calls for Practical Valuation Efforts
story highlights

FOREST EUROPE has reported on the outcomes of the Expert Group on the valuation of forest ecosystem services, at which participants discussed the identification of ecosystem services, valuation approaches, and implementation of forest ecosystem services valuation in the pan-European region.

Fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Legally-Binding Agreement on Forests in Europe (INC-Forests4)28 February 2014: FOREST EUROPE has reported on the outcomes of the Expert Group on the valuation of forest ecosystem services, at which participants discussed the identification of ecosystem services, valuation approaches, and implementation of forest ecosystem services valuation in the pan-European region.

The meeting, held the 27 February 2014 in Madrid, Spain, noted the difficulties in implementing large-scale valuation given that the subject has thus far been approached on a largely theoretical basis. As such, participants called for additional learning from practical case studies and examples on valuation in forests. Such learning is, according to the expert group, important if forests are to be managed sustainably within the global economy and through appropriate national policies.

The next meeting of the expert group is planned for late in the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter of 2014. [FOREST EUROPE Press Release]
