UNFCCC8 December 2014: On the occasion of the twentieth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Colombia, Guyana, Indonesia, Malaysia and Mexico submitted their national data on forest sector emission reductions.

The submissions form part of the process for the establishment of forest reference emission levels (FREL), which is a requirement for receiving results-based payments under REDD+. The next step in the process is the evaluation of the data and information by forest experts, a step that has already been completed by Brazil, the first country to present background information for FREL.

Upon receiving the submissions, Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, indicated that taking such steps would lead to the implementation of REDD+ and the realization of social and environmental benefits. [UNFCCC Press Release] [UNEP Press Release]
