AfDB13 December 2013: The first meeting of the Rural Water and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) Coordination Committee (RCC) of the African Development Bank (AfDB) focused on improving national and regional level coordination, supplementing African Minister’s Council on Water (AMCOW) leadership, and exchanging regional experiences.

The meeting, which took place in Abuja, Nigeria, on 5 December 2013, produced three main recommendations, namely to: highlight best practices in rural water and sanitation in close collaboration with key knowledge partners; strengthen advocacy for rural water and sanitation investments in each country and at the regional level; and improve monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems at the national level for rural water and sanitation services, with a special view towards the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) from 2015 onwards.

The next meeting of the RCC will take place in parallel with Africa Water Week, taking place in Dakar, Senegal, from 26-30 May 2014. The RWSSI was established by the AfDB in 2003, with the objective of improving rural access to water and sanitation from a baseline of 47% and 44% respectively in 2000, to 80% in 2015.
