1 July 2011: The UN-REDD Programme and the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) have published three jointly-commissioned papers on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+). The peer-reviewed papers address participation, benefit-sharing and safeguards initiatives for REDD+.

The paper on participation, titled “Draft Framework for Sharing Approaches for Better Multi-stakeholder Participation Practices,” seeks to identify emerging lessons on stakeholder participation practices from ongoing stakeholder participation processes.

The paper on benefit-sharing, titled “REDD+ Benefit Sharing: A Comparative Assessment of Three National Policy Approaches,” discusses benefit-sharing approaches associated with payments for ecosystem services, participatory forest management, and forest concession revenue sharing arrangements. The publication also assesses the ability of these policy approaches to address drivers of deforestation, and summarizes challenges and lessons learned from REDD+ benefit sharing planning to date.

The paper on safeguard initiatives, titled “A Review of Three REDD+ Safeguard Initiatives,” outlines current approaches to applying social and environmental standards and principles, and highlights current REDD+ safeguard initiatives from the FCPF, UN-REDD and REDD+ Social and Environmental Standards, including lessons learned and anticipated challenges to safeguards application.
