FCPF Collaborates on Report on REDD+ National Registries
story highlights

The report, titled "National REDD+ Registries: An Overview of Issues and Design Options," provides an overview of the value and function of national registries, and outline key requirements for their implementation.

It underscores that REDD+ registries can help enhance transparency, efficiency and benefit-sharing mechanisms.

May 2011: The Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and KfW Bankengruppe have collaborated to produce a report on the utility of national registries for initiatives on REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks).

The report, titled “National REDD+ Registries: An Overview of Issues and Design Options,” stresses the need for national accounting of REDD+ initiatives through centralized registries, with the aim to: track and validate sub-national results-based actions; ensure environmental integrity across projects; promote transparency, efficiency and benefit-sharing mechanisms; and track domestic leakage. The report provides an overview of the value and function of national registries, and outline key requirements for their implementation. It further proposes design options, including regulatory aspects and cost considerations, and discusses the use of registries for compliance and voluntary markets. The authors indicate that some countries may wish to implement such registries in phases to eventually capture growing REDD activities at both national and international levels.
