indonesia_norway_itpgr4 October 2016: Held from 27-30 September 2016, in Bali, Indonesia, the Second Global Consultation on Farmers’ Rights exchanged views, experiences and best practices, and identified gaps and needs related to the implementation of farmers’ rights as set out in the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR).

The meeting drafted a list of recommendations that will be brought to the attention of the ITPGR Governing Body at its seventh meeting, in 2017.

The consultation was organized by the Governments of Indonesia and Norway, with the support of the ITPGR Secretariat, in response to the invitation made by the Governing Body in 2015 for Parties and organizations to convene regional workshops and other consultations. It gathered 95 participants from 37 countries, including legal and policy experts and representatives of farmers, governments, NGOs, the seed industry and international organizations.

The consultation highlighted that further work is needed on implementation of ITPGR Article 9 on farmers’ rights to support smallholder farmers’ contribution to agricultural biodiversity conservation, enhance food security and nutrition and reduce poverty.
