Forest Europe FAOSeptember 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) announced the launch of a project to develop and harmonize criteria and indicators (C&I) for sustainable forest management (SFM). The project will focus, in particular, on developing socio-economic and governance indicators.

Both the policy and practice aspects of C&I will be considered by the project through a review of existing indicators, stocktaking exercises, regional workshops and a final report. As an additional key input to project work, a Global Forum on Forest Indicators will be convened at the XIV World Forestry Congress, which will be held 7-11 September 2015, Durban, South Africa.

Planned outputs from the project include a vision statement and roadmap for strengthened C&I in SFM and a proposed set of C&I indicators. The project will be implemented in Africa, Asia and Latin America with a budget of US$1.3 million.

The project will be carried out over 2 years (2014-2015) in partnership with the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF), International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), Montreal Process, Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), Commission des Forets d’Afrique Centrale (COMIFAC), and FOREST EUROPE.
