Fao5 November 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released a report titled “Food Security and Agricultural Mitigation in Developing Countries: Options for Capturing Synergies,” at the Barcelona Climate Change Talks.
The report highlights the mitigation potential from agriculture of improvements in cropland and grazing land management and soil restoration. It calls for considering food security, agricultural mitigation, adaptation and development in global agendas and national strategies for climate change and food security, as well as up-front financing. It stresses the need for leveraging finance for terrestrial-based climate mitigation and underscores the lack of consensus on measurable, reportable and verifiable requirements.
The report suggests considering a decision of the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC for a work programme under the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) in part to address methodological issues. It also suggests the importance of building country-led phased approaches through pilots for readiness, confidence and capacity for implementation. [FAO press release][The report]
