14jan_10_0213 January 2010: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released a Land and Water Discussion Paper that addresses opportunities for mitigation and adaptation in dryland pastoral systems. The paper, titled “Review of evidence on drylands pastoral systems and climate change: Implications and opportunities for mitigation and adaptation,” highlights the importance of pastoral systems for livelihoods and the susceptibility of dryland areas to land degradation. It notes that better rangeland management will result in increased soil carbon sequestration and improved livelihoods. However, the paper also underlines that socio-political and economic conditions in many dryland areas are the primary barriers to improved management and successful adaptation to climate change impacts.
