The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) released the 12th issue of InFo News, highlighting 300 years of sustainable forestry and honoring Hans von Carlowitz, a German administrator who was the first person to define the concept of sustainability.
31 July 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) released the 12th issue of InFo News, highlighting 300 years of sustainable forestry and honoring Hans von Carlowitz, a German administrator who was the first person to define the concept of sustainability.
The newsletter also reports on two FAO meetings held in June 2013, namely the 38th session of the FAO Conference and the 147th session of the FAO Council. The sessions recognized the importance of forests and adopted the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and Development of Forest Genetic Resources, the first of its kind for the forestry sector.
Other events highlighted in the newsletter include the 3rd International Union of Forest Research Organizations Latin American Congress, which discussed the challenges facing forests in Latin America and the need for a stronger and more permanent forum for discussion. In addition, the newsletter reports on the strategic retreat of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and the meeting of the FAO sustainable forest-based industries committee.
The newsletter also notes the launch of GlobAllome, an online tool for the assessment of forest biomass and carbon stocks, as well as the need for an improved land management approach to address Indonesia’s forest fires.
