FAOApril 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the latest edition of its Infosylva newsletter. It features upcoming events and news items related to both FAO and forests, including a new FAO publication on guidelines for developing national forest financing strategies.

The newsletter highlights the opening of the tenth session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF10), which is taking place from 8-19 April in Istanbul, Turkey. UNFF10, which is convening under the theme of forests and economic development, is expected to result in decisions on economic development and forest financing. At UNFF10, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and its partners demonstrated Global Forest Watch 2.0, a platform that combines forestry data, timely satellite data and user-submitted information, to support governments, communities and companies in tackling deforestation. The newsletter also describes a study that found that strictly protected parks in the Amazon are more effective at reducing deforestation than areas that allow for resource extraction. It further notes a project between FAO and the Government of Cameroon to restore depleted mangrove areas.

Upcoming events listed in the newsletter include: the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)/FAO/InnovaWood Seminar on Innovation in the Forest-based Sector; the International Conference on Forests for Food Security and Nutrition; and the conference on Forest Products and Technologies for the Future.
