External Team Advises UNGA President on Sustaining Peace, Strengthening UNGA

UNGA President Miroslav Lajčák formed a Team of External Advisors, composed of 16 eminent personalities from the five UN regional groups, to advise him on ways “to best advance his priorities” during UNGA 72.

The Team of External Advisors met with the UNGA President in October 2017 and January 2018.

It considered, inter alia, ways to strengthen the work of the UNGA in the future, and the overall efficiency of the UN related to sustaining peace and preventing conflict.

21 January 2018: UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Miroslav Lajčák met with a Team of External Advisors to discuss the UNGA’s work during its 72nd session, strengthening the UNGA, and the overall efficiency of the UN related to sustaining peace and preventing conflict.

In September 2017, UNGA President Lajčák announced that he had formed a Team of External Advisors to advise him on ways to advance his priorities during UNGA 72, including on peace and conflict prevention, migration, sustainable development, human rights and human dignity, and the UN reforms. The first meeting of the Team of External Advisors took place in New York, US, on 6 October 2017, and focused on impressions related to the UNGA high-level week and on messages emanating from the General Debate in September 2017.

On 21 January 2018, in Rome, Italy, the UNGA President met with the Team to discuss the work of UNGA during the main part of its 72nd session, expectations for the resumed part of the session, and ways to strengthen the overall work of UNGA in the future. The Advisors also considered efforts undertaken, successes, failures and the overall efficiency of the UN related to sustaining peace and preventing conflict, ahead of the UNGA High-Level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace, which is scheduled to take place from 24-25 April 2018, in New York, US.
