UN-HABITAT27 November 2014: Kenya’s Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development, the County Government of Kiambu, and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) convened an Expert Group Meeting on options for addressing waste management challenges and governance gaps in Kenya’s secondary towns. The three-day meeting, held on the theme ‘Towards Harnessing Waste and Developing a Sustainable Waste Management in Urban Kenya,’ focused in particular on waste management to address unemployment.

Participants identified challenges facing sustainable solid waste management in Kenya, including lack of cutting edge technology, and lack of education.

UN-Habitat notes that rapid urbanization in Africa brings a growing issue of solid waste, and without an understanding of how to handle the waste, it can lead to pollution and other consequences. Waste management, meanwhile, can provide “unlimited” employment opportunities for young people. [UN-Habitat Press Release]
