every-drops-matter19 May 2013: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with secondary school students and teachers in Sochi, the Russian Federation, who are learning about protecting the Black Sea using ‘The Black Sea Box.’ Every Drop Matters, a partnership between the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Coca-Cola Company, distributes this interactive environmental education kit, which targets two million school children in coastal cities in Turkey, Ukraine and the Russia Federation.

The Black Sea Box contains interactive games that teach children about protecting the Black Sea ecosystem. During Ban’s visit, students demonstrated a game that illustrates how the Black Sea countries collaborate to protect the Black Sea ecosystems. Ban recognized water conservation as a top priority for the global community.

The Black Sea Ecosystem is the largest anoxic basin of the world and faces challenges from coastal development, nitrogen and phosphorus decomposition, overfishing, untreated urban water discharge and other sources of pollution. UNDP, the Commission on the Protection of the Black Sea Against Pollution (BSC), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Turkey collaborated in developing the box, which was recognized as one of 11 projects showcasing global best practice on water by Expo 2012.
